Communities of Practice at the World Bank:

Breaking Knowledge Silos to Catalyze Culture Change and Organizational Transformation

Knowledge management can give organizations a competitive edge, increase team performance, and foster collective, large-scale change and innovation. This book tells the story of how knowledge management and communities of practice have been used at the World Bank to introduce a radically new way of working and innovating.

Rich and powerful stories, told by economic development practitioners and knowledge management specialists throughout the World Bank, describe the strategies, instruments, tools, and processes at the core of one of the most important and radical reorganizations of the world’s premier international development institution.

Knowledge management cannot be a backroom function. It is central to the success of organizations, large and small.

The book is written not only for knowledge management professionals, but also for C-suite executives and middle managers who will see the benefits of bringing knowledge management to the core of organizational performance and competitive advantage

The book provides practical examples that can be replicated in other large global knowledge, financing, and development institutions and that will be relevant for public, private, and non-profit organizations.

Book Presentation to the Middle East and North Africa Sustainable Development Team at the World Bank

In our first dissemination event for the Communities of Practice at the World Bank book, we had a dialogue on February 1, 2024, with the Sustainable Development team of the World Bank working in the Middle East and North Africa region. This team has started a new set of communities of practice to tackle some of the most difficult sustainability challenges in the region. They are looking to break silos across the technical disciplines they cover: water, agriculture, cities, environment, and social development.

“Creating, curating, and disseminating knowledge is essential for maintaining the technical depth of any organization and for professional development of individuals. This book provides examples from the World Bank that will be helpful to other organizations and individuals that want to learn from on the leading organizations in knowledge management.”

“Understanding Risk contributed to make Disaster Risk Management “cool”, resulting in an increased participation of young professionals in an area that was previously the remiss of a few engineers, and catalyzing an entirely new generation of experts and practitioners to focus on a topic that is now at the forefront of the development agenda. Chapter provides some insights on how this happened.”
