Communities of Practice at the World Bank

Communities of Practice at the World Bank Book Launch

We want to invite you to two events at the World Bank related to our book.

The first one will be a general book launch on March 7, 10 AM-11:30 AM EST in hybrid format (connection information below and in person at the WBG Library, room MC C3-214). Qimiao Fan, Director of Strategy and Corporate Initiatives at the Sr. MD for Development and Policy Office, will give opening remarks. Please feel free to share the information to your colleagues and contacts.

The second event will take place at the same location in the afternoon (March 7, 3:30PM – 5:00PM EST) and it is more geared towards a practical discussion on KM tools and approaches for building communities, driving innovation, and mobilizing in-country institutions to share their experiences.

Event 1

Join us for a conversation with the editors: Ede Ijjasz-Vasquez, Phil Karp and Monika Weber-Fahr who will present the story behind their new “Communities of Practice at the World Bank” book illustrated by the experiences of more than 40 authors here at the World Bank, the book explains how knowledge management, traditionally viewed as being about information systems and processes, can play a fundamental corporate role, creating a competitive edge, increasing team performance, and fostering effective, large-scale organizational transformation.

The discussion will reflect on the leadership lessons to make communities of practice and other knowledge management strategies, instruments, tools, and processes work for better services to clients. The book illustrates how communities of practice and knowledge management is central to the mission and core advantages of global organizations like the World Bank.

Event 2

Join us for this hands-on “Tips, Tools, and Techniques” session that will offer an opportunity to meet and discuss with the editors of the new “Communities of Practice at the World Bank” book: Ede Ijjasz-Vasquez, Phil Karp and Monika Weber-Fahr, as well as several of the participating authors.  The editors will provide an overview of tips and tricks on how knowledge management tools – fully integrated with operational teams – can produce faster, higher-quality, and more innovative products.

Afterwards, the editors and some of the authors will be available for small-group and bilateral discussions of their experiences, offering tips and ideas for the challenges that you may be facing in the knowledge sharing activities that are part of your programs right now or in the near future.  This will be a fun and interactive session – but no worries, you can also relax and enjoy just listening to the discussions.  Topics featured will include but not limited to the use of KM tools and approaches for building communities, for driving innovation, for mobilizing in-country institutions to share their experiences in narratives and formats that make sense to those in other countries, for building knowledge services, and for creating and sustaining culture change.
